Passivation
Our process control program includes lot-by-lot acceptance testing and regular testing of all chemical baths and operating parameters.
During forming, machining, tumbling, lapping and other operations performed in the manufacture of stainless steel products, microscopic particles of iron may be embedded in or deposited on the surfaces of these products. If allowed to remain, the iron particles provide corrosion sites that will ultimately result in accelerated corrosion of the product. In order to prevent this corrosion, semi-finished or finished parts are given a passivation treatment. The passivation process consists of immersing the stainless steel in a solution of citric acid, or other acid plus oxidizing salts, which dissolves the embedded or deposited iron and restores the original corrosion-resistant surface (a thin, transparent oxide film).
Selection of the correct passivation process is determined by the stainless steel alloy involved and by the specification requirements. We have incorporated most alloy specific passivation processes as specified by AMS2700E, AMS-QQ-P-35, ASTM A967-35 and ASTM A380-13 to meet our customers’ needs. Many OEM passivation specifications are derived from these guiding documents. Our passivation processes include citric acid, nitric acid and nitric acid with oxidizing salts that comply with most OEM specific standards. Our Sales Engineering team can assist our customers with selection of the passivation process that will comply with applicable OEM requirements. Our database shop order system assures the same passivation process which has been selected will be specified each and every time the job comes to our shop.
We offer certification to:
AMS 2700 Method 1 Nitric Passivation: Type 1, Type 2, Type 3, Type 4, and Type 6
AMS 2700 Method 2 Citric Passivation (AMS 2700 supersedes AMS QQ-P-35 and QQ-P-35C, but we still offer certification to the superseded specifications)
QQ-P-35 Type I, Type II, Type III, Type IV and Type VI
ASTM A967-13 Citric 1, Citric 2, Nitric 1 and Nitric 2
ASTM A380-13 Table A2.1, Part II, Codes F, G, H, I, and J

*About RoHS Compliance
Santa Clara Plating Co., Inc. is an RoHS-compliant facility. Processed parts will be RoHS-compliant unless otherwise noted in the Price Table. Explanation of the RoHS compliance notes in the Price Table follows:
- “No” – Processed parts will not be RoHS compliant due to coating chemistry.
- “Check” – Check with our Quality Department to determine if your part will be RoHS compliant. We will check for issues with solution entrapment and other design concerns. We can also help with your design to ensure RoHS compliance.
- “Yes” – Your parts will be RoHS compliant.
